Sibling support
Support for Siblings
Siblings of neurodivergent kids also need support! It’s common for kids and teens to experience a mix of positive and negative feelings related to having a neurodivergent brother or sister. While the family dynamics may lead to high levels of empathy, pride and compassion, it can also cause confusion, frustration or even resentment. It’s not uncommon for siblings to feel extra responsibility or pressure, or to struggle with the sense that their siblings get special treatment.
Many clinicians at The Sterling Institute for Autism have neurodivergent siblings or close family members themselves, giving them a unique and personal insight into what it’s like to grow up in a family that may require different rhythms, routines, or expectations. We are here to help siblings make sense of their own experiences– whether that means learning more about their brother’s or sister’s differences, expressing their own feelings in a safe space, improving family communication, or developing healthy coping strategies. Sometimes, siblings just need time and space that’s truly their own. Support is always personalized: parents and other family members are included in therapy when it’s helpful and aligned with each family’s unique needs and goals.
